The Sanbo School of Zen is a hybrid of the Soto and Rinzai Schools, started by YASUTANI Haku'un Roshi on 8 January 1954. The current abbot, YAMADA Ryôun Roshi , is based in Kamakura, Japan. Florida Sanbo Zen practices true to the tradition of Sanbo Zen International, under the guidance of Valerie Forstman Roshi.
A teisho is formal dharma talk presented by a Zen master, usually on a koan or Zen text. In our Sanbo Zen lineage, we are fortunate to have an expanding library of teishos by our teachers, featured below.
Valerie Forstman Roshi is our Gainesville Sanbo Zen guiding teacher. Based out of the Maria Kannon Zen Center in Dallas, Texas, she conducts sesshins here at the Gainesville Retreat Center four times per year, and offers regular teishos and dokusan (face to face interviews) via Skype throughout the year. Maria began zen practice in 1987. She serves as guiding teacher of Sophia Zen Center in Indiana. She works as program director of the Museum of World Religions in Taiwan.
